Modi to Attend ASEAN Summit Virtually, Citing Diwali Celebrations

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has confirmed he will participate virtually in the ASEAN-India Summit scheduled in Kuala Lumpur from October 26-28, citing ongoing Diwali celebrations as the reason for his absence.

Virtual Participation Confirmed

Modi announced his decision through social media, expressing enthusiasm about strengthening the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed receiving notification about Modi’s virtual attendance due to the Hindu festival of lights coinciding with the summit dates.

The gathering will convene all ten ASEAN member nations alongside major trading partners including China, Japan, and the United States, making it a significant diplomatic event in Southeast Asia.

Trade Negotiations Context

The decision comes amid ongoing trade discussions between New Delhi and Washington. Negotiations have faced complications following US tariffs on Indian goods, which reached 50 percent after Washington imposed an additional 25 percent levy in August over concerns about Indian Russian oil imports.

Recent reports suggest both nations are progressing toward an agreement that could reduce tariffs on Indian imports to approximately 15-16 percent, though energy and agriculture sectors remain key negotiation points.

Diplomatic Developments

Modi and Trump held a phone conversation earlier this week focusing primarily on trade matters. The US president reportedly encouraged the Indian leader to maintain peaceful relations with Pakistan, emphasizing his role in facilitating dialogue between the nuclear-armed neighbors through diplomatic and economic channels.

The virtual attendance decision eliminates speculation about a potential Modi-Trump meeting in Malaysia, as Washington has not officially confirmed the US president’s attendance at the summit. India continues navigating complex diplomatic relationships while balancing domestic celebrations with international commitments.
