GILGIT: A man reportedly shot dead his wife and another man in Tangir, an additional district of Gilgit-Baltistan, allegedly over an illicit relationship, in yet another ‘honour’ killing, police confirmed on Sunday.
Two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) of the incidents have been registered at Jaglote Police Station, Tangir.
According to the first FIR, filed by Zarnia, the wife of the slain man Rehmat Ghani, her husband was allegedly shot and killed by Abdul Qadir and Mujeebul Haq, both residents of Lorik in Tangir. The FIR said that the deceased was accused of having an illicit relationship with Abdul Qadir’s wife.
The second FIR was filed by the daughter of the slain woman, Ramzan, and the accused Rehmat Ghani. It also referred to the alleged illicit relationship. This is the third ‘honour‘ killing incident in the area since July 21.
Earlier on July 31, a man reportedly shot dead his wife and Awami Action Committee (AAC) leader Iqbal Javed, aka Javed Numbardar, in the Tangir area of Gilgit-Baltistan on Thursday, allegedly over an illicit relationship.
Similarly, on July 21, a man allegedly shot and killed his wife, a mother of four, and another man in the Farodi area of Tangir, citing suspicions of an illicit relationship between the two victims.
Despite FIRs being registered in all three cases, no arrests have been made so far.
Nishat Perveen, the widow of Javed Iqbal, has written letters to the Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister, Governor, Supreme Appellate Court (SAC) Chief Judge, and human rights organizations, seeking justice and protection for her family.
Tangir Additional District Police Officer (ADPO) Wazir Liaqat told HUM News English that honour killings are alarmingly frequent in the region. He acknowledged challenges due to limited resources, but assured that efforts are underway and the suspects are expected to be arrested within a week.
