ISLAMABAD: Emergency relief supplies from the United States (US) reached Pakistan on Saturday as destructive floods continued to batter Punjab.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the assistance was sent through the US Army Central Command. A total of six flights are scheduled to deliver aid to Pakistan.

Relief items include tents, water pumps, and generators. The goods were handed over to the Pakistan Army by the US Chargé d’Affaires and will be distributed among flood-affected communities.

The ISPR said Pakistan is thankful to the US government and military for supporting the nation during this crisis.

The US Embassy in Islamabad said in a social media post that “US military aircraft delivered essential supplies at the request of the Pakistan military in response to the devastating floods.”

The post added that Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker conveyed condolences to the people of Pakistan whose lives have been uprooted by the disaster.

Punjab, which produces much of Pakistan’s wheat and rice and is home to nearly half of the country’s 240 million population, has suffered the most damage.

Nearly 50 people have died in the Ravi-Sutlej-Chenab flood spell since late last month, bringing the provincial death toll to 231 since June.

Nationwide, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported 905 deaths in rain and flood-related incidents since the monsoon began on June 26.
