ISLAMABAD – Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa touched down in Pakistan on Tuesday, marking the beginning of a significant three-day diplomatic visit aimed at transforming the nation’s football landscape.
The high-profile AFC chief, who simultaneously holds the position of FIFA Senior Vice-President, received a warm welcome at Islamabad International Airport. Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) President Mohsin Gillani, alongside AFC Secretary General Sonam Jigmi and other distinguished officials, greeted the dignitary who has been accorded State Guest status throughout his stay.
Strategic Meetings to Shape Pakistan’s Football Future
During his visit, Sheikh Salman is scheduled to engage in comprehensive discussions with Pakistan’s top civil and military leadership. The Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) has confirmed that these high-level meetings will concentrate on critical areas including football infrastructure enhancement, capacity building programs, and collaborative sports development initiatives.
“This historic visit represents a turning point for Pakistani sports,” declared IPC Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan. He emphasized that the collaboration would strengthen sports diplomacy while empowering youth across Pakistan and neighboring Asian nations through regional cooperation.
Building on Past Connections
Sheikh Salman’s previous visit to Pakistan dates back to 2014 when he attended the SAFF Women’s Championship, shortly after assuming the AFC presidency. This current visit signals renewed commitment to elevating Pakistan’s position within Asian football circles.
The three-day agenda promises to unlock new opportunities for Pakistani football, potentially attracting international investment and expertise to develop world-class training facilities and grassroots programs nationwide.
